 About Us
 Print this page

The Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department consists of 24 members of which two paramedics, eight EMTS, Six Firefighter II, Eight Firefighter I, and Five support members who are all dedicated to the town of Lake Placid and it's citizens.  Our district covers over 25 square miles, consists of 8 lakes, multiple commercial buildings, and one state hwy.  We run on average 350 calls per year including both medical assists, fires, car accidents, and other assistance calls.

We are funded through a non-ad valorem fire assesment and do not receive any milage from the local taxes.  Our funding is set up so that every residential home pays a flat $20 per year, every commercial building or plaza strip pays $100 per year.

Our fleet of trucks includes one class A engine, two water tankers, two brush trucks, and one rescue unit.  Both our engine and rescue truck carry an assortment of TNT rescue tools, aka "The Jaws of Life"

Our current ISO (insurance safety office) rating of the department is a 5/9 dual rating meaning that any building or residence within 5 road miles and 1000 feet of a fire hydrant has a 5 level of protection.  Any residence or building outside of these conditions has a 9 rating of protection.   A level 1 rating is the best with a 10 being the worst.  There are a very few departments with a level 1 protection rating.  We are pleased to be a 100% volunteer department with a level 5 rating which is compariable to many paid departments.

Our level 9 rating is largely in part due to the lack of fire hydrants in certain areas of the disctrict.  This is why we heavily depend on our water tankers and mutal aid from surrounding departments  After all, the fire department cannot do is primary function of fighting fire without a water supply.

Though out the year the department participates in numerous different community support functions in the town as well as visits to the schools during the month of October which is fire safety month.

We welcome you to come down and visit us every Thursday night at the station.  If you are interested in joining please feel free to fill out the on-line application link to the left.  We welcome any one young or old.  Some of our members are as young as 18 (minimum age to join) and as old as 89 years old.  The department provides all training and gear free of charge.  Thinking about making a career out of firefighting?  Well then come join us and get some first hand experience.
